TRANSPORT IN MILTON KEYNES BEFORE THE NEW CITY

Matthew Barby

Replica of Thornton Bridge over the Buckingham Canal
My picture is of a cart going over the Grand Union Canal. I chose to photograph this picture because it shows different ways of transport before the trains and cars.

It was important because it shows ways of transport before the trains in Wolverton. Many people were pleased because of the Canals, but some were very angry, especially farmers whose farms were split in two. But for most it was a cheap and fast way to get goods.

The Grand Union Canal which this boat is on had a very large effect on transport and the way in which people lived. It was latterly outdated by the trains.

The reconstructed Stony Stratford to Wolverton tram
In my photograph there is a tram. It was a steam tram pulled along the road by a large engine. People took the tram to work at Wolverton Works. This tram was a big part in the history of transport in Milton Keynes. It can carry as many passengers as a double decker bus of today. It was the biggest tram in Britain in its day and it was one of the only forms of public transport in its day. It was quick and easy way to travel to Wolverton Works.

It opened up new ideas for new transport such as the London underground, double decker buses and other means of public transport.

The reconstructed Stony Stratford to Wolverton tram
My photo is of a Tram that was used in Wolverton and Stony Stratford over 100s of years ago. It is very large. I chose this picture because it looks very interesting which it is, although it is old it is still very comfortable.

The Wolverton and Stony Stratford Tram ran in Northern Buckinghamshire from the 1880s to the 1920s. It was the last steam tramway to operate in the whole of Britain.

It had an effect on Milton Keynes by it being an established form of transport that was cheap to run and good for the local workers. It may have helped in building up the population in the area.

The reconstructed Stony Stratford to Wolverton tram
My photo is of the Wolverton and Stony Stratford Tram used over one hundred years ago. I chose the Tram because it shows the important change and growth of transport from the 1900’s to now. It was also used locally. The Tram was one of the biggest trams ever built. It made travelling from one place to another a lot easier. As well as that it made people’s day a lot easier because their feet wouldn’t ache or be tired so they could concentrate on their work a lot more.

The Tram is important because it shows how Milton Keynes transport system has grown and developed over the last century. The effect the Tram had on the lives of people locally was massive because it transported people from place to place so they could get to work and get back home. This eventually lead to the beginning of the city’s grid system.

The reconstructed Stony Stratford to Wolverton tram
This is a picture of a tram. It has been in Wolverton for over one hundred years. That’s over a century! It is impressive because it is the second biggest tram ever built!

I chose this picture because it has a big history behind it. The seats were made from a comfortable wood and arched. Most of us had to crouch just to get on the tram. There was two floors on the tram. They were curved . It seated around one hundred workmen when they travelled from Wolverton to Stony Stratford. You could beat it on a bike, because it only travelled at about nine miles per hour!

It is important because it is  an  important part of Milton Keynes’s history of transport . It helps to get links with other towns and cities. Which also helps us bring goods in like food and  chocolate.  As there was already a tram, Wolverton, Stony Stratford and a railway station they decided that they could build the new city of Milton Keynes.

The reconstructed Stony Stratford to Wolverton tram
In my photograph there is a tram that travelled from Wolverton to Stony Stratford. It has been in Wolverton in the last century.

I chose the tram cause it has a long history it is a two storey high tram, it is a long kind of tram and it has lots of wooden, curved seats and the tram has a curved floor.

The tram is an important part of Milton Keynes because it is the 2nd biggest tram in the world. And it seated about 100 people in the tram

Sinclair C5 electric car

This is a picture of an electric car. This was used in the 80s. It is a Sinclair C5. I chose this picture because it is cool because it a car just for 1 person.

I then went on to the MK Museum website and I thought it was very good . However, I thought the pictures I have taken could be included, because it shows how transport has changed over the years.
