LAWN MOWERS

MOWERS

The lawn mower made a great impact on our way of life:

  • it changed the way we manage grass land
  • it made organised sport possible
  • it allowed us to create open spaces for recreation

The Museum is well known for its collection of vintage lawn mowers. The display includes some very rare machines dating from the early Victorian era. There are also examples of unusual motor mowers as well as numerous hand mowers.

WHAT'S ON DISPLAY

The display comprises more than 40 machines dating from the 1850s to the 1960s. These portray the history and development of the lawn mower from the 1830s to the present day.

Highlights include:

  • Budding-Type Mower
  • Suttons Mower
  • Shanks Pony Mower
  • MP Mower Pusher
  • John Shaw Governor Motor Mower
  • Greens Silens Messor

Wall panels explain the history of the mower and a special booklet gives details about each mower on display.

The pony mower can occasionally be seen working at the museum with other horse drawn equipment.

A separate shed houses a cylinder grinder used to sharpen mower blades. This is demonstrated at special events.

KEEP ON MOWING

The Museum is the base of The Old Lawnmower Club. This was the first club set up specifically for mower enthusiasts.
