PRESS INFORMATION: MUSEUM CELEBRATES REGISTRATION

Issue Date: 27 March 2002

Ref: MKM02/02

Milton Keynes Museum has been awarded official Registered status by Resource (formerly the Museums & Galleries Commission), the Government’s Council for Museums, Archives and Libraries. A registration certificate was presented to the Museum by the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire, Sir Nigel Mobbs KStJ JP, to John Hilton, Chair of the Museum Trust, at a special ceremony held at the museum on Friday 22 March. The Mayor of Milton Keynes, Councillor Pat Seymour, and a number of museum volunteers and supporters were present.

Registration signifies that the Museum has achieved nationally approved standards in museum management, collection care and public services. It shows that the Museum is a suitable home for collections that are part of the area’s heritage. It also means that the Museum can apply for and receive support from a wide range of public sources.

Museum Director, Bill Griffiths says: “This shows how far we have come since the disastrous fire six years ago. We are staffed exclusively by volunteers and this is recognition of their ability. It shows what can be achieved when people from a local community work together. We provide the local community with a first class museum but receiving registration is not the end of the process. It marks the start of a new phase where we will be able to ask for funding from sources such as the National Lottery to take us to the next level.”

Milton Keynes Museum preserves the history of Britain's newest city. The Museum is located at an authentic Victorian farm, built in the late 1840s on the outskirts of Wolverton, one of the UK's original "railway towns", and now part of Milton Keynes. Its large and constantly changing selection of displays have something for all the family.

Collections include social, domestic, industrial and agricultural items with a connection to the area. The displays follow the history of the Milton Keynes area, including North Buckinghamshire and South Northamptonshire, from 1800 to the present day. During this period the area changed greatly, culminating in the decision in the 1960s to create the UK's last "new city" of Milton Keynes.
